This compact camcorder features a built-in gimbal with Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization and a low-light Exmor R CMOS image sensor to produce crisp, high-quality UHD 4K video or 16.6MP still photos. Record up to UHD 4K video at 24 or 30 fps using Sony's XAVC S codec at rates up to 100 Mb/s or up to 50 Mb/s 1080p HD video. Fast, intelligent autofocus tracks your subjects while keeping them sharp and the ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T zoom lens features a 20x optical/30x digital zoom in 4K and up to 250x digital zoom in HD.
The FDR-AX43A's Dual Video mode enables you to record MP4 movies simultaneously with your XAVC S 4K video, perfect for playback on your phone and faster uploading to your network or the web. The Dual Video Mode also enables the use of the Highlight Movie Maker, a one-button function that creates a highlight reel of your footage you can quickly play back at an event. A 4K time-lapse mode can be used to condense your adventures or capture stunning nature or atmospheric sequences.
- Tilting Touchscreen LCD: For monitoring your shots from behind the camera or from the front when using the camera for vlogging, the 3" 921K tilting touchscreen LCD is ideal for selfie-style shooting and for all other shot composition options. Simply flip the screen to its open position and power is automatically turned on, giving you access to the camera's settings menu for fast and easy operation.
- Easy Point-and-Shoot Operation: The FDR-AX43A camcorder features a range of automatic image and audio options for easy point-and-shoot operation as well as enhanced manual controls that offer greater creative freedom for advanced users. An assignable ring on the front of the camcorder can be assigned to control zoom, focus, exposure, iris, shutter speed, exposure, or white balance.
- 1/2.5" Exmor R Low-Light CMOS Sensor: The CMOS sensor provides enhanced sensitivity for capturing high-quality images with less noise under dark as well as bright shooting conditions.
- Built-In Gimbal with Optical Stabilization: The FDR-AX43A's integrated gimbal with Balanced Optical SteadyShot image stabilization cushions your images against shaking and jarring, even while running or zoomed in.
- ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T Lens with 20x Optical Zoom: The ZEISS Vario-Sonnar T lens features a wide 35mm equivalent focal length of 26.8mm (in movie mode) to fit more into your shots and a 20x optical zoom range in UHD 4K. Multicoating reduces unwanted reflections, ghosting, and flares. To get you closer to the action, the zoom range can be extended up to 30x/40x (4K/HD) using Clear Image Zoom.
- Fast Intelligent AF: The Fast Intelligent AF uses accurate contrast-detection autofocus to minimize lens motion, predict the AF range, and accelerate lens drive, so you can capture more fleeting moments.
- 5.1 Channel Onboard Audio Capture: During AVCHD recording, a 5.1 channel built-in microphone captures active sounds coming from five directions, allowing you to experience your home movies the way you experienced them while recording. Level meters on the LCD panel provide visual monitoring of each channel's levels. Note: 5.1 channel audio is only available when recording in AVCHD and is not available for UHD 4K recording, which uses the XAVC S codec.

- XAVC S, AVCHD, and MP4 Codecs: The FDR-AX43A records 4K and HD movies in the XAVC S format, which uses MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 for video compression and linear PCM for audio compression while saving files in an MP4 wrapper. This allows for extended recording times and easy editing. Additionally, you can choose to record HD in AVCHD (ideal for HDTV and Blu-ray disc burning) or MP4 (ideal for online sharing).
- Dual-Video Recording: Record two movies at the same time—one in the maximum-quality XAVC S or AVCHD format and another in MP4 format—giving you a small file ready for instant sharing alongside a professional-grade file for further editing.
- 4K Time-Lapse: Capture 4K still images continuously over an extended period at a selected constant interval, then edit the sequence of images in postproduction to create stunning time-lapse movies.
- Super-Sampled Full HD Playback: Enhance your viewing experience even without a 4K television. Using super-sampling, the camera automatically down-converts 4K footage to exceptionally detailed Full HD.
- Timecode and User Bit: Add metadata to your movies for precise advanced editing. The Timecode function records hours, minutes, seconds, and frames on image data, while the User Bit function records information such as date, time, and scene number using eight-digit arbitrary numbers, useful for multicamera editing.
