Overview
The A6M3 Model 22 was a variant of the legendary Mitsubishi Zero fighter, designed to correct the reduced flight range of its clipped-wing predecessor, the Model 32 "Hamp." This was achieved by returning to the standard-length 12-meter wings and fitting larger fuel tanks. First assigned to flight groups in early 1943, the Model 22 saw extensive and heavy action in the hotly contested Solomon Islands campaign.
