The album was partially inspired by the 2018 death of Bjork's mother, Hildur Runa Hauksdottir, particularly the songs 'Sorrowful Soil' and 'Ancestress'.
The songs were written during and after the COVID-19 lockdowns, during which Bjork returned to her home country.
